GIFBefore · 1.4 MBAfter · 123 KBWhat this does
Compress a GIF and keep it moving: the page decodes every frame, builds one palette for the whole animation, writes only the pixels that changed from one frame to the next, and searches for the best-looking setting that fits your size limit. The honest limit: a GIF made from video stays big, because almost every pixel changes in every frame.
A measured example
| Before | 1.41 MB · 480 × 320 · 24 frames |
|---|---|
| After | 122.8 KB · 302 × 202 · 8 frames · 128 colours |
| Playing time | 2.16 s before and after |

When to use this, and when not
- Use it for reaction GIFs, screen recordings saved as GIF, stickers and banners that are over a chat or upload limit.
- If the place you post to accepts video, a short MP4 is far smaller than any GIF; this site does not make video.
- For a still picture saved as .gif, compress PNG or compress photos will usually do better.
Honest limits
- Animated WebP output is not offered.
- Very long GIFs are refused with their size in pixels rather than freezing the tab (about 40 million pixels across all frames).
- Frame thinning makes fast motion look choppier; Choose myself lets you keep every frame.
- Comments and other text blocks inside the GIF are not copied to the new file.
Privacy on this page
The GIF is read into this tab and worked on by a background worker; nothing leaves your device. To check that yourself, read is it private?
Step by step
- Choose the GIF. Press Choose a GIF, drop it on the page or paste it.
- Pick a size limit. The largest limit below your file is selected. Tap 8 MB, 5 MB or another limit if your app asks for one.
- Check it. The new GIF plays beside the original with its size, frames, colours and playing time.
- Download. Press Download GIF. The file is named after yours with -compressed added.
Questions
Frames or colours: what gets cut first?
Colours first, because going from 256 to 128 colours is hard to see. Then the picture gets smaller, and only when it would drop below 60% of its size are frames thinned (every 2nd, then every 3rd). Under a size limit this choice is made for you; under Choose myself you set each one.
Does the GIF play for the same time?
Yes. When frames are dropped, each kept frame takes over the time of the frames dropped after it, so the animation lasts as long as before. The result line shows how long the new GIF plays next to the original's length.
What size limits does it offer?
10 MB, 8 MB and 5 MB (common chat and upload limits), and 2 MB, 1 MB, 500 KB and 200 KB for smaller places. It starts at the largest limit below your file's size and shows the exact size it wrote.
Why is my GIF still big?
A GIF of a video or a photo changes almost every pixel in every frame, and GIF stores that badly. If even 32 colours at a quarter of the size and every 3rd frame does not fit, the page says so and offers the smallest it made. A shorter clip fits more easily.
Is transparency kept?
Yes. Transparent pixels stay transparent. On a GIF with transparency, each frame is written whole rather than as the difference from the frame before, so it is usually a little larger.
Is my GIF uploaded?
No. Decoding, every trial encode and the final GIF happen in a background worker in this tab. Nothing is sent anywhere.
