What this does

Compress a scanned document for an upload: the lighting is evened out across each page (a shadow on one side is lifted), the paper is pushed to white and the text is darkened, then it is written in greyscale at 1654 pixels on the long side with 200 DPI in the file, and searched down to 300 KB. The honest limit: nothing here straightens a crooked page.

Grey or black and white

  • Grey keeps soft edges, pencil, stamps and light handwriting. It is the safe choice for most pages.
  • Black & white turns every pixel into paper or ink. Text-only pages come out much smaller and very crisp, but faint marks may vanish and photos on the page turn to blotches.
  • Off keeps colour: use it for coloured certificates, stamps that must stay red or blue, or a page with a photo on it.

When to use this, and when not

  • Use it for certificates, mark sheets, ID copies, letters and forms that a portal wants as JPG.
  • When the portal wants a single PDF under a size, use JPG to PDF under 200 KB.
  • For a signature on paper, use compress signature to 20 KB: it also crops to the ink.

Honest limits

  • No deskew, no perspective correction and no text recognition.
  • Lighting is evened out across the page, but a very dark shadow, a fold or a coloured stamp can still show as grey; even light gives the cleanest result.
  • Pages smaller than 1654 px are not enlarged; they keep their own size.
  • Your browser's JPEG encoder is used, so sizes can differ slightly between browsers.

Privacy on this page

Capture information is removed from every page here. To see why a page might be marked, read what a skip means.

Step by step

  1. Scan or photograph the page. Lay the page flat in even light, or use a scanner. Straight and filling the frame works best.
  2. Choose the pages. Press Choose photos and pick one page or several. Each page is cleaned, sized to 1654 px and given 200 DPI.
  3. Pick the look. Grey is set. Choose Black & white under Scanned page clean-up for text-only pages, or Off to keep colour.
  4. Download. Press Download for one page, or save the ZIP for several. Each row shows the size and what was done.

Questions

Why greyscale?
A printed page is black text on white paper, and colour costs bytes without adding anything you can read. Writing it in greyscale lets the same 300 KB carry more sharpness. For a page with only text, Black & white goes further: every pixel becomes paper or ink, which compresses very well. Keep colour (switch the clean-up off) for stamps, photos or coloured forms.
What does 200 DPI mean here?
The page is sized to 1654 pixels on its long side, which is an A4 page at 200 dots per inch, and 200 DPI is written into the file. Portals that read the density then see 200 DPI. The number in the file does not change the pixels; the long side does.
Is the 300 KB per page?
Yes. Every page you choose is its own JPEG, each searched down to at most 300 KB with the quality kept at 60 or above so text stays sharp. Only if that is still over do the pixels step down. Change the size in the recipe bar for portals that ask for 100 KB or 200 KB.
Can I get one PDF instead of several JPGs?
Yes, on the JPG to PDF page: choose all the pages there, pick a size such as 200 KB, and it writes one PDF with every page inside it, under that size.
Does it straighten a crooked photo of a page?
No. There is no deskew or perspective correction on this site. Photograph or scan the page straight and flat; the clean-up only whitens the paper and darkens the text.
Is my document uploaded?
No. The clean-up and every encode run in this browser tab, and nothing is sent anywhere. Capture information (date, camera, place) is removed from these files by default.
