What this does

Compress images for website use in one pass: every file becomes WebP at quality 80, no wider than 1920 px, without capture information, and the folder comes back in the same shape. The honest limit: it writes one size per image; several widths for responsive images are not in this build.

When to use this, and when not

  • Use it for a site's images before upload, or to slim a theme or a blog's image folder.
  • For PNG screenshots and graphics with sharp text, compress PNG keeps PNG and often does as well.
  • For WebP files you already have, compress WebP adds lossless WebP.

Honest limits

  • No AVIF output and no automatic several-widths set in this build.
  • Safari cannot write WebP; there the rows say so and JPEG is the format to choose.
  • Files under 100 KB are left alone on this page, since they are rarely worth a format change.

Questions

WebP or AVIF?
WebP, in this build. Every current browser shows it, and it is usually 25–35% smaller than JPEG at the same look. AVIF can be smaller again, but this site cannot write AVIF yet, so it is not offered rather than offered and failing.
What long edge should images be?
As wide as they are ever shown, times about 1.5 for sharp screens. 1920 px (where this page starts) covers a full-width image on most laptops. Content images in a column are often fine at 1280 or 1600; set it on the recipe bar.
Why remove capture information?
A web page does not need the camera, the date or the place, and a photo with a location in it tells every visitor where it was taken. It also saves a few KB per image.
Does this work for WordPress?
Yes: compress the folder here, then upload the WebP files to the media library (WordPress has accepted WebP since version 5.8). The folder structure is kept in the ZIP, so a theme's image folder comes back in the same shape.
