Guide

Is it private?

The claim on every page is that photos are opened and compressed on your device and nothing is uploaded. You do not have to take that on trust: here is how to check it in two minutes, and what the site keeps in your browser.

Check it in the browser’s own tools

  • Open the page, then the developer tools (F12, or Cmd+Option+I on a Mac) and choose the Network tab.
  • Tick Preserve log, then choose a few photos and press Compress.
  • Watch the list while it runs. You will see the page's own scripts and the worker load once. You will not see any request carrying your photos: no POST, no upload, nothing the size of a photo going out.
  • For a stronger test, choose Offline in the Network tab (or switch off Wi-Fi) after the page has loaded, and run the batch again. It works the same.

What is kept in your browser, field by field

So that a long job can be resumed after the tab closes, the browser keeps a small record. It never holds a picture, and a check in the code refuses to write one.

  • Job record (IndexedDB, last five jobs): the folder's name, the recipe, and for each file its path inside the folder, its size, its modification time and its outcome (bytes before and after, the code and the sentence).
  • Saved recipes (local storage, up to eight): the name you gave and the settings. Nothing else.
  • Remembered folder (Chrome and Edge on a computer, only when you opened a folder through the folder picker): a permission to ask for that folder again. It holds no file and no list of files, and re-opening it always shows the browser's own prompt.
  • The compressed copies themselves are not kept: they live in this tab's memory until you save them, which is why the page asks before you leave with unsaved work.

What the page never does

  • It has no upload address and no server that processes images.
  • It does not write into the folder you chose; results are saved where you choose, as a ZIP or as files.
  • It does not show advertising.

The legal version is the privacy page. To try the check on a real job, start on the photo library page or compress photos.

Questions

Does the site need the internet to compress?
Only to load the page. Once it has loaded you can switch off Wi-Fi and compress a folder; nothing in the compression needs the network.
What does the visit counter see?
On compressphotos.com only, Cloudflare Web Analytics counts a page view: the page address, the referring site, the browser and country. It sets no cookie and never sees a photo, a file name or a recipe. The privacy page has the detail.
Can I remove what the browser keeps?
Yes. Saved recipes are deleted from the Recipe panel, the remembered folder from the Device panel, and everything at once by clearing this site's data in your browser's settings.
